In terms of physics, buoyancy, or upthrust, refers to the upward force exerted by a fluid that counteracts the weight of an object immersed within it. The pressure exerted by a fluid increases with depth due to the mass of the fluid above. Consequently, an object's submerged portion experiences greater pressure at its bottom than at its top, generating a net upward force known as buoyant force. This phenomenon is governed by Archimedes' principle, which states that this force is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object.

As a result, objects denser than the fluid will sink, whereas those less dense or optimally shaped (as in boats) can float. Such behavior assumes a non-inertial reference frame influenced by gravity or accelerating forces that define a direction toward 'down.'
